Acne and the Paleo Diet

Today at CrossFit Iconz, we were discussing the Paleo Diet.  Someone mentioned that their kids were partially Paleo, but still ate wheat.  I asked if they had acne.

I brought this up because wheat allergies and/or gluten insensitivity is a major cause of adolescent and adult acne.  Over the years I have suggested to my Yoga clients that they simply refrain from eating any wheat products for a week, to see if they notice a difference in their acne eruptions.

In just seven days their face and chest will mostly clear up.  Then after that, they will eat wheat – pasta or bread, for example – and their face/chest will break out again.

Surfing the web today I came across an article written by Loren Cordain, Ph.D, titled: Acne Vulgaris: A Disease of Western Civilization.

For those who do not know, Dr. Cordain is the world’s leading expert on Paleolithic diets.

His conclusion, in the paper linked above, is the same as my own research into this area.  Namely, and simplified .. a diet free of wheat/grain is one free of acne.
